Mayor Spence 2017

City Mayor's Blog

I am very proud to be the first Mayor for the City of Warman.

From the first time I came to visit Warman over 30 years ago it has been very apparent Warman's charm comes from it's people.  The residents of Warman welcomed my family back then, and they continue to share their friendly community with all who come to live here or visit this fine City.  I am pleased to  have this kind of oppurtunity to share on a monthly basis, the good news and positive actions taking place in our community, the City of Warman.  Grab a cup of coffee and read on what is current and happening in the City of Warman.

Our Youth Today are Our Leaders Tomorrow

“Children learn how to make good decisions by making decisions, not by following directions.” — Alfie Kohn

To all the young leaders out there, I admire you. You have energy. You are enthusiastic. You bring new ideas and a fresh perspective to the table. And you are likely willing to take a few risks in order to break the status quo. You have a lot of potential.

It was pointed out by Alvin Toffler that “The secret message communicated to most young people today by the society around them is that they are not needed, that the society will run itself quite nicely until they — at some distant point in the future — will take over the reigns. Yet the fact is that the society is not running itself nicely … because the rest of us need all the energy, brains, imagination and talent that young people can bring to bear down on our difficulties. For society to attempt to solve its desperate problems without the full participation of even very young people is imbecile.”

Warman City Council has been proactive by establishing the position of youth council representative. This role offers a young leader the opportunity to observe and participate in municipal politics alongside the mayor and city council. Since the youth representative position was created five years ago, we’ve had some exceptional young leaders sit at the table with us. Past youth council representatives include Ethan Guthro (2014-2015), Aleya Anderson (2015-2016), Jordan Ramsfield (2016-2017), and Emily Zunti (2017-2018).

Our current youth council representative is Karanjit Bola. Karanjit is active in the community, serving as vice-president of Warman High School’s SRC, participating in cadets, and playing a multitude of sports. For his job with city council, Karanjit attends regular council meetings and also participates on the Recreation Advisory Committee, where he relays to the other committee members what the youth of Warman are talking to him about.

Karanjit recently returned from a trip to Ottawa where he participated in the annual Forum for Young Canadians at Parliament Hill. Forum is a wonderful opportunity for youths from across the country to gather and develop their leadership skills by interacting with national politicians and employees in an authentic political setting. Karanjit was one of 107 participants – truly an exclusive learning opportunity! He will be presenting a report to city council about the experience, including the various things he learned, people he met, and photos of the week. We look forward to it!

For young leaders in Warman interested in the youth council representative position, watch for the job advertisement towards the end of spring. We are looking for an individual aged 16 to 18 who is a hard worker, has personal and professional integrity, is enrolled in high school with good grades, and is wanting to expand his or her leadership experiences.

Today’s young people are tomorrow’s leaders. Let’s influence our future leaders by demonstrating the components of effective guidance so they are best prepared to lead the world.
