Mayor Spence 2017

City Mayor's Blog

I am very proud to be the first Mayor for the City of Warman.

From the first time I came to visit Warman over 30 years ago it has been very apparent Warman's charm comes from it's people.  The residents of Warman welcomed my family back then, and they continue to share their friendly community with all who come to live here or visit this fine City.  I am pleased to  have this kind of oppurtunity to share on a monthly basis, the good news and positive actions taking place in our community, the City of Warman.  Grab a cup of coffee and read on what is current and happening in the City of Warman.

Saying Goodbye

Posted on January 29, 2018 at 9:53 AM by Brittany Hadley

Throughout our life we will experience many changes, some of these changes will be quickly welcomed while others will be difficult to accept. In our community, we have seen substantial changes especially in the last decade. While most of these changes have been welcomed there have also been some changes that have been difficult for our community to accept. One of these changes is the loss of one of our community businesses that has called Warman home for over twenty-five years. How sad that feels, and not a change we wanted to see.

Shop Easy

The Super Valu in Warman, also known as the Shop Easy opened in the community in the nineties. Originally located where the current Dollarama is, this business was the community’s first ‘larger’ grocery store. The Shop Easy quickly became an employer of many of the residents including the youth of Warman. In fact, my own daughter’s first job was at the Shop Easy. As a parent it was so reassuring to know that my child could work locally and not have to drive into the city to make a little extra money. For many in Warman this business also became a central hub of the community where you could pick up your groceries and stop in for an impromptu chat with friends and neighbours.

From the moment you walked through the doors of this beloved grocery store you were greeted by smiling faces and helping hands. I know for many in the community, especially those residents who have lived here for many years, there a special nostalgic feeling around this business. For myself, I will never forget the delicious Danish back ribs that they used to bring in. We had a good friend who would prepare ribs for us using these Danish back ribs, and I would boldly say that no restaurant ever came close to those tasty bites. We were always advised that the secret ingredient was Don’s back ribs that he would order in. In fact, one of the things the Super Value/Shop Easy was known for was their ability and willingness to bring in items that residents requested. Another item that I will so miss, that brings back such wonderful memories, is the incredible bakery. The fresh buns and bread, and the delicious baked treats were so good and were the first thing that hit your nose the moment you walked in the store. I dare say that there was a lot of extra baking that was purchased as a result of that delicious smell. On behalf of our community and its residents I want to thank this cherished community business for all of the special memories.

I also want to take this time to thank the Super Valu/Shop Easy for the incredible support it has given to the community over the years. This business gave so generously to a wide array of community events. From pancake breakfasts to community barbeques, they were always ready to help out. I often remember having to run into the store to pick up some extra syrup or a few more bottles of ketchup for events and the management would often so generously donate those extra items on top of their original donation. When I think of the number of groups that have received some support from the Super Valu/Shop Easy over the years I think it is safe to say that most families in Warman have been touched by the generosity of this local business.

On behalf of the residents and the City of Warman I want to thank all of the staff, managers and owners, past and present, for your service, dedication and community spirit that you have given to the residents and the community of Warman over the years. It has been so hard to see the empty shelves and the quiet parking lot, it is an end of an era. Moving forward, I want to wish all of you at the Super Value all the best as you turn this page and move on to your next adventure.
