Mayor Spence 2017

City Mayor's Blog

I am very proud to be the first Mayor for the City of Warman.

From the first time I came to visit Warman over 30 years ago it has been very apparent Warman's charm comes from it's people.  The residents of Warman welcomed my family back then, and they continue to share their friendly community with all who come to live here or visit this fine City.  I am pleased to  have this kind of oppurtunity to share on a monthly basis, the good news and positive actions taking place in our community, the City of Warman.  Grab a cup of coffee and read on what is current and happening in the City of Warman.

farewell

What a year 2020 has been! I never imagined my last year on Warman City Council would have us isolated from one another by a worldwide pandemic. I had imagined a year full of events, meetings, and gatherings where I could share my gratitude over and over again with the many residents, businesses, and colleagues I have come to know. With 2020 being almost all but cancelled my options are limited. While I cannot be in person, allow my words to express that it has been a tremendous honour to serve Warman for the past two decades, six as a Councillor and 14 as Mayor.

So here it goes in a very brief recap.

Twenty years of public service have flashed by in a blur, an interesting and most rewarding blur. It all began when Dave and I chose Warman to raise our family and to work with the expectation to experience life to the fullest. Today, after 35 years residency and 20 years serving on Council, our laid-back little community is well over 12,000 people strong. I have watched us grow from a town of approximately 2,000 when our family moved to Warman, to blossom into a well-established, fully serviced, beautiful and safe city.

During my time on Warman City Council, I made it my goal to lead by example with integrity, honesty, fairness, and compromise as my foundations. I loved serving my community in so many different aspects. Having the opportunity to bring together new and innovative partnerships, building strong relationships with regional stakeholders, working with and learning from our seniors, promoting our community locally, provincially, and nationwide, mentoring our young people, working with investors to build a stronger commercial core are just a few important highlights of the work I have had the privilege to be a part of.

While being an ambassador for our city, we grew our city together and built partnerships for better opportunity and service beyond our own limitations and for our collective good.  Witnessing our growth and change with the hands and help of so many brings a sense of accomplishment and excitement for me.

I am so immensely proud of our city and all that we have become.

I recommend pursuing municipal leadership to anyone who is looking for a way to serve their community. Although serving on Council is challenging, the role has been very rewarding. I am grateful for this incredible experience. Much planning, discussion, problem solving, implementation, oversight and accountability go into each project and every issue, but the fruition in seeing this effort become a lasting foundation for our community is heartwarming and fulfilling, making the rewards worth all the sacrifice.

I have many people to thank. First, I give thanks to my family for supporting me through times when I had to miss special family events. Their unconditional support powered me through the challenges and reinforced all the reasons of why this work is important. I thank all the residents and businesses of Warman – you have become my community link, supporting and challenging me along the way. I thank the incredible team of Councillors and staff who worked alongside me all of these years, sharing ideas, pulling up our sleeves and working towards our goals together. I thank all the partners and collaborators I have met from outside our community who helped form Warman s legacy of partnerships. These many partnerships forwarded our region as a whole and has demonstrated that our power through unity is stronger than the pieces that form it.

Mayor SpenceWarman is a beautiful and vibrant community. I know through my leadership positions I have made positive contributions, but more importantly I have developed meaningful relationships. Everything I have learned over the years, I will take with me as I walk through that next door of life.

Thank you Warman for showing your trust in me for all these wonderful years. I will cherish all the memories and bonds of friendship, forever.
